BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2020 ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME RECORD WARMTH CONTINUES FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE DAY... The big story of the last few days has certainly been the warmth that has overspread the region. Today marks the fourth consecutive day of record high temperatures here at the Observatory. So far today the high has been 74 degrees, which beats the previous record for the date of 72 degrees set back in 1975. The 3 previous days records were as follows... 11/06/20: DAILY RECORD HIGH MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 72F,           BREAKS PREVIOUS RECORD OF 71F SET IN 1959 AND 2015 11/07/20: DAILY RECORD HIGH MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 75F,           TIES PREVIOUS RECORD OF 75F SET IN 1938 11/08/20: DAILY RECORD HIGH MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 73F,           BREAKS PREVIOUS RECORD OF 72F SET IN 1938 In addition to the warmth, an abundance of sunshine has been observed today with mainly clear skies dominating, the only clouds have been a few cirrus off in the distance. As is normally the case under a big ridge of high pressure, the atmosphere is a bit inverted. This has been the reason for a rather impressive smoke layer the last few days. From the observatory this looks like a brownish layer near the horizon in all quadrants. Today it's more impressive off to the north and northeast, likely where surface temperatures are a bit cooler due to marine influence, thus creating a stronger inversion in those areas. Thanks to the smoke and haze, visibility has been limited today, only 25-35 miles this morning, improving a bit to 50 miles early this afternoon. The wind has been quite light today, generally out of a west-northwesterly direction, but hanging out at less than 10 mph. The average speed since 7 A.M. has only been around 6 mph! With only one notable precipitation event for the month to date, we are currently running at a monthly deficit of greater than a half inch, and a yearly deficit of more than 3 inches. The maximum temperature so far today is 74 degrees, this is 22 degrees above the normal high of 52 degrees. The minimum temperature since midnight has been 52 degrees, this is 17 degrees above the normal low of 35 degrees. Today's Observations: 7 A.M.
