BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY  MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015    ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME HISTORIC JANUARY BLIZZARD BECOMES 2ND LARGEST SNOWSTORM OF ALL TIME AT BLUE HILL The historic blizzard that engulfed the region from Monday through the early hours of Wednesday morning officially brought 30.8 inches of snow, with a liquid equivalent of 2.44 inches of water. Yesterday's calendar day total of 25.2 inches is likely to break records for midnight to midnight storm totals, though these records are not as well established. Yesterday did set a new daily record snowfall as well for the date, beating out 11.7 inches that fell in 2011. 30.8 inches just barely beats out the Blizzard of 1978 which brought 30.1 inches of snow, and another major storm of 30.3 inches of snow March of 1960. Yesterday's blizzard still fell well short of the all time record of 38.7 inches that fell from the 24th of February through the 28th in 1969, snowing for more than 100 consecutive  hours. Snow for January is now up to 40.7 inches, which moves  January 2015 into 8th place for snowiest January. With more snow forecast for Thursday-Friday, we can still stand to move further up the list: 1) 56.3 in 1948 2) 48.2 in 2011 3) 48.0 in 1904 4) 47.6 in 1996 5) 46.0 in 1966 6) 44.8 in 2005 7) 44.5 in 1923 8) 40.7 in 2015 9) 38.3 in 1987 10) 35.6 in 1978 Once again, here is the list of storms total over 20 inches here at Blue Hill Observatory's history dating back to 1885, with the new storm update: 1) 38.7 on 24-28 Feb, 1969 2) 30.8 on 26-28 Jan, 2015 3) 30.3 on 3-5 Mar, 1960 4) 30.1 on 6-7 Feb, 1978 5) 30.0 on 31 Mar - 1 Apr, 1997 6) 29.8 on 6-8 Mar, 2013 7) 26.6 on 8-9 Feb, 2013 8) 24.7 on 17-18 Feb, 2003 9) 24.3 on 5-7 Dec, 2003 10) 23.0 on 5-7 Mar, 2001 11) 22.2 on 16-17 Feb, 1958 12) 21.0 on 9-10 Feb, 1969 13) 20.5 on 22-23 Jan, 2005 14) 20.3 on 12 Dec, 1960 15) 20.0 on 31 Jan - 1 Feb, 1898 Conditions this morning improved immensely just after sunrise, with a layer of scattered altocumulus lingering through the morning. Sunshine had finally returned for the first time since the early morning hours of Monday. By the 1:00 PM EST observation skies were mostly cloudy with a layer of altocumulus aloft, along with altocumulus lenticularis distant to the N. Visibility had improved to 70 miles and a  maximum temperature of 19F had been recorded so far today.
