BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA   DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY SUNDAY, JULY 21, 2013 ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME   HEAT WAVE FINALLY ENDS   After 6 days of 90+ degree heat, the heat wave has ended today as the temperature has only climbed to 81F by 2 PM EDT this afternoon, and is unlikely to rise much further.  The humidity has also come down somewhat today, giving the air a more pleasant feel than it has had over the past several days.  Winds have been very light for the most part, with a persistent eastward component that has kept the air coming in from the ocean, preventing a major rise in temperature.  The sky has been mostly cloudy today, with a combination of altocumulus, cirrus, and cumulus that have been forming and building this afternoon.  No precipitation fell at the summit yesterday, though thunder and lightning were observed from thunderstorms that moved to our south.    The recent heat wave lasted six days at the Observatory. A total of 6 records, all highest minimum temperature, were tied or broken.  For three consecutive days, July 18-20, the temperature at 7 AM EST was 80F or higher. Although higher temperatures have been recorded at this time of day in recent years, this may be the first occurrence on record of three straight days of 80F or higher at that time of day in records checked back about 50 years.  In addition, this month has so far seen 10 days with a high temperature of 90F or higher, which is among the greatest number of such days for any month on the entire period of record.    BHO Greatest Number of 90-Degree Days per Month, (1885-2013)   1) 14 in July 1952 2) 13 in August 2002 3) 10 in August 1944    10 in July 1949    10 in July 1963    10 in July 2010    10 in July 2013 (through 7/21) 8)  9 in July 1911     9 in August 1928 10) 8 in August 1949     8 in July 1963     8 in July 1988   BHO Longest Heat Waves of Consecutive 90-Degree Days, (1885-2013)   1)  9 on 11-19 August 2002 2)  8 on 10-17 August 1944 3)  6 on 24-29 July 1963     6 on 16-21 July 1977     6 on  6-11 July 1988     6 on 16-21 July 1991     6 on 15-20 July 2013   BHO Highest 7AM EST Temperature, deg F (1960-2013)   1) 84 on 6 July 2010 2) 83 on 22 July 2011 3) 82 on 21 July 1991    82 on 18 July 2012 5) 81 on 2 August 1975    81 on 27 June 1999    81 on 18 July 2013  *    81 on 20 July 2013  * 9) 80 on 23 July 1978    80 on 23 July 1998    80 on 5 July 1999    80 on 6 July 1999    80 on 9 August 2001    80 on 4 July 2002    80 on 30 July 2002    80 on 2 August 2006    80 on 3 August 2006    80 on 21 June 2012    80 on 22 June 2012    80 on 19 July 2013  *   Today's Observations:   7 A.M.
