BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02186 ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA   DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY SUNDAY, JULY 29, 2007   ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME   1/2 INCH OF RAINFALL IN 15-MINUTE DOWNPOUR WITH THE LIKELY BRIEF OCCURRENCE OF HAIL...  TOTAL OF 0.90 INCH RAINFALL FOR THE DAY SATURDAY   A late afternoon thunderstorm dropped 0.23 inch in five minutes, 0.41 inch in 10 minutes, and 0.50 inch in just 15 minutes ending 5:30 P.M. EDT late Saturday afternoon. The total rainfall for the day was 0.90 inch and the most since 1.52 inches on June 4th.  The maximum amount this month had been 0.41 inch on July 8th.  The nearly one inch of rain put a significant dent in what had become a rather large negative departure for July.  However, the month is still one inch drier than average.   After a high temperature reading of 87 degrees in the early afternoon along with very humid conditions (dewpoints near 70), the day's low temperature of 69 degrees was recorded as the thunderstorm and heavy rain was ending at 5:30 P.M. EDT.   I am rather certain than hail fell (stone size unknown) just as the late afternoon downpour was ending at 5:30 p.m. The evidence is seen in an unusual but telltale marking on our weighing gage rainfall trace.  In addition, a sudden drop in temperature was noted around the time and a minimum temperature of 69.1 occurred at 5:26 p.m.    Today's observations:   7 A.M.   Weather: Partial obscurement with 7/10 of sky obscured by fog  Temperature: 70F, Dew point: 70F, Wind: W at 06 kts Wind: gradually veering past hour Sea-level pressure: 29.91 inches Hg, rising Visibility: 1/2 mile, 2 east, 1 southeast in fog, slowly increasing  6-hour min temp: 69F     24-hour rainfall: 0.90 in.
