BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02186 ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2005 ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME [unless otherwise noted] RECORD RAINFALL BRINGS MORE THAN 6 INCHES PAST 30 HOURS... TOTAL FOR THE PAST WEEK SURPASSES 10 INCHES...SEVEN CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH NO SUNSHINE THROUGH FRIDAY...AN EIGHTH DAY TODAY WOULD BE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY FIFTY YEARS... The 24 hour rainfall total through 8 AM EDT today was 5.28 inches in our 8" rain gage, and an additional 1.03 inches was measured for the six hours ending at 2 PM EDT. This brings the total since Friday morning up to 6.31 inches with light rain continuing. The calendar day total for October 15th is about 4.5 inches, surpassing the previous record for the date of 3.12 inches in 1930. Friday was our seventh consecutive day with no sunshine recorded, and Saturday may be the eighth day. In our records, checked back to 1950 so far, the last time there was no sun for eight days was January 8-15, 1956, and there were only two other occurrences in any month of seven straight days with no sunshine, February 21-27, 1969 and October 8-14, 1998. Only a trace (less than 3 minutes) of sunshine was measured over the 10 days from January 8-17, 1956. Rapid rises and falls of the barometer were recorded as a 'V' on the barograph between 6:30 and 7:30 AM EDT this morning, which may indicate the passage of a gravity wave. The peak wind gust so far today has been 47 mph NE at 4:26 AM EDT. At mid-afternoon, the wind has turned to the NW as the storm passes to our east, and the heaviest rain is beginning to end.
