SNOWFALL RATE REACHES 2.0 TO 3.5 INCHES PER HOUR FEBRUARY 28 ALMOST ONE FOOT OF SNOWFALL IN ABOUT 8 HOURS! 8 P.M. 2/28 THRU 4 A.M. 3/1 The snow fell fast and furiously late Monday evening with a melted amount of 0.34 inch in the last hour of February 28 probably giving a maximum snowfall rate of close to 3.5 inches per hour! A total of 0.80 melted and an estimated 8.5 inches of snow fell in just four hours from 8 p.m. to midnight! This established a new record daily snowfall for February 28 of 8.5 inches; the old record was 7.9 inches in 1956. North-northeast winds were gusting 40 to 46 MPH starting around 10 p.m. and a peak gust of 52 MPH NNE-N occurred at 1:21 a.m. on March 01. Snowfall for March 01 was 3.3 inches from midnight to 7 a.m. The total melted precipitation from midnight to 7 a.m. was 0.50 inch. High wind speeds and gusts diminished steadily after 4 a.m. By 7 a.m. the wind was NNW 16 gusting to 28 mph. The final snowfall for the storm was 11.8 inches and 1.30 inches of melted equivalent in the standard gage and 1.14 inches for ASOS before precipitation quit around dawn. Some flurries during the morning and late evening left 0.3 inch of snow. Our seasonal snowfall has now reached 97.8 inches or 51.9 inches more than the average.
