BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY, MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02186 ELEVATION 635 FT. ABOVE MSL....10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA FRIDAY OCTOBER 26 2001... PLEASE VISIT OUR WEB SITE AT: http://www.bluehill.org/ NEXT MEETING OF THE BLUE HILL OBSERVATORY... A joint meeting with the Greater Boston Chapter of the AMS has been scheduled for Thursday, November 1 at 7:30 PM to be held at the Trailside Museum, Milton, MA. Our speaker will be Josh Nichols. The topic of his talk will be "An Intercomparison of A.S.O.S. and Standard Manual Observations at Blue Hill Observatory." PLEASE NOTE....TIME CHANGE On Sunday, October 28, 2001, clocks will fall back one hour to Eastern Standard Time. That is, all clocks except the official clocks here at the Observatory which remain on standard time year round. Our observations will still be at the same time but we'll report them in Eastern Standard Time. DAILY DISCUSSION.....10/26/2001 DRAMATIC DROP IN DEWPOINT AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY THURSDAY EVENING.... 43-DEGREE DEWPOINT CHANGE IN 2 HOURS! AIRMASS CHANGES WITH NO PRECIPITATION....OCTOBER DRY SPELL CONTINUES.... ONLY 3/4 INCH OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH.... A warm and humid airmass was replaced by a cooler and very much drier aimass last evening. At 6 p.m. our temp and dewpoint were 69 and 61 with relative humidity of 76%. Just two hours late the temperature had not dropped that much but the dewpoint had plunged 43 degrees! At 8 p.m., the air temp. was 65 but the dewpoint was 18 degrees giving us a super dry low humidity of 16%. That's about the fastest drop in dewpoint and humidity I've ever seen! So, we went from a warm and humid day to a cooler but desert dry day all in a couple hours. But, where were the showers when we needed them? So many forecasts had called for showers with the front but it went by here with not a drop of rain. Wind gusts were not that unusual either with a peak of 30 MPH W when the airmass was changing early last evening.
