DAILY DISCUSSION....1 P.M. 3/28/2001 2ND WETTEST AND THIRD SNOWIEST MARCH ON 117-YEAR RECORD... A REAL COLD DAY ON 3/27 WITH 35/19 AND MEAN OF 27 WAS 12 DEGREES COLDER THAN NORMAL.... Late March and early Spring snowstorm brings 6.0 inches to the summit and 0.58 melted precipitation. I broke it down as 5.4 inches through midnight on 3/26 and 0.6 in. after midnight early the 27th. March snowfall of 40.9 inches makes it third snowiest March on the 117-year record. The high temperature for March through the 27th is only 50 degrees... How often does that happen. It might even be a record low max. for so late in the month of March. PONKAPOAG POND HAS NOW THAWED....3/25/2001 LATEST THAW SINCE 1987 WHEN IT THAWED 3/30/1987... HOUGHTONS POND STILL 90% ICE COVERED.... The official date for the thawing of Ponkapoag Pond, 1.5 miles to our SE, will be March 25 this year. The average date is March 11.
