MIXTURE OF PRECIPITATION YESTERDAY MAKES FOR A MESS, BUT RIME ICE MADE FOR A BREATH-TAKING SCENE ON THE SUMMIT... A mix of rain and snow developed yesterday around 9 A.M. and then trended to snow by 10 A.M. A total of 2.5 inches of snow fell bringing the total snow on the ground up to 9 inches! Freezing drizzle in the evening put a very thin layer of glaze on top of the snow. Being in the clouds overnight coupled with temperatures in the low to mid 20s deposited a good 3/4" to 1" thick coating of rime ice on many surfaces. A rare treat for Blue Hill, this phenomena occurs quite frequently on top of Mount Washington. It was certainly a picture perfect postcard scene of a winter wonderland!
