DAILY DISCUSSION....10 A.M. 2/18/2001 WINDS DIMINISH EARLY THIS MORNING...LOW OF 8 DEGREES... The morning minimum temperature of 8 degrees was nothing unusual for mid February but during this winter of few really low temperature readings it was one of only FOUR days with minima in the single numbers. Gusty WNW to NW winds diminished rapidly after midnight. The last gust to 40 MPH occurred about 12:30 a.m. A peak of 45 MPH NW was recorded by Aerovane at 12:27 a.m. Last evening winds were gusting past 40 MPH at times and a peak of 54 MPH WNW was recorded by Aerovane at 7:20 p.m. Windchill temperatures dropped to 30 below zero as actual air temperatures dropped through the teens with strong winds. SATURDAY'S HIGH WINDS....2/17/2001 The highest gust observed on our NWS 420C dial was 51 kts (59 MPH W) at 12:35 P.M. by observer Mike Iacono. ASOS reported at peak of 58 MPH W at 12:36 P.M. Other gust recorders at the Observatory had the following: Aerovane...........62 mph W at 12:35 P.M. A very brief heavy snow squall passed the Observatory late Saturday morning with visibility dropping to 1/8 to 1/4 mile but the snow melted as it fell with 0.01 melted but no snow accumulation.
