DAILY DISCUSSION....1 P.M. 2/12/2001 COLDEST MORNING TEMPERATURE AT 5 DEGREES THIS MORNING SINCE 3 DEGREES ON DECEMBER 26TH...ANOTHER WINDY DAY ON SUNDAY... Our low temperature of 5 (4.9 deg. in the enclosure) as winds were diminishing from a peak gust to 36 MPH NW just before 2 A.M. this morning. On Sunday peak wind gusts reached 55 MPH NW on Aerovane at 1:16 p.m. while at the same time ASOS recorded a peak of 48 MPH NW. The fastest 2-minute wind was 37 MPH NW at 3:47 p.m. Windchill temperatures dipped to 25 to 30 below zeor during yesterday morning with winds averaging near 30 MPH and temperatures close to 15 degrees. The total snow depth on the ground is now becoming quite variable here on the summit. The are many bare spots and places where the snow is up to a foot deep. So, the best we could do this morning was come up with an average of 7 inches and that's down from 12 inches Saturday morning. The peak wind gusts for Saturday, February 10... Aerovane 69 MPH W at 10:47 a.m. NWS 420C 64 MPH W at 10:47 a.m. (observed on dial) ASOS 61 MPH W at 10:47 a.m. Our official peak will be reported as 64 MPH W and surpassed the previous record for the date of 63 MPH NNW in 1969; this on a record back to 1940.
