Red, White and Blue Kite Day at Blue Hill Observatory

Annual Spring Open House at the Observatory

Time: 10 AM - 4 PM
Date: Saturday, May 12, 2012
Location: Blue Hill Observatory
Admission: Free

Join us for our Spring Open House to take a tour of our facility, enjoy the view from the summit of Great Blue Hill and participate in many fun activities. Activities include presentations on weather and climate, kite making and flying, tagged balloon releases, self guided tours with interpreters throughout the facility, and tables for the WINS program, MWO, NWS, and Friends of the Blue Hills. There also will be special sales on many items from our gift shop. Click here for directions to the Observatory. To access the activities at the Observatory, walk the one-mile long road from the Trailside Museum to the summit of Great Blue Hill (no private vehicles are allowed on the summit road). A shuttle van will also be available for seniors and special access from the Trailside Museum parking lot.


Weekend Observatory Guided Tours

Time: 10 AM - 4 PM
Date: Saturday and Sunday, February - November;
            Year-round by appointment
Location: Blue Hill Observatory

Regular weekend tours for 2012 will begin on Saturday, February 18th. Please call ahead during questionable weather to check tour availability (617-696-0562).

The Observatory is open for public tours from February to November on most weekends from late morning to mid-afternoon as weather permits. The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for ages 5-17, free for ages 5 and under, and free for members of the Observatory. A discounted adult tour admission of $3 is available for members of AMC, WGBH, Mass Audubon, AKA, KONE, senior citizens and students with a valid ID. Tours on other days and times are available by appointment. Tours last about 20 minutes and are adapted as appropriate for each group. For scouts and other groups larger than six, please reserve a specific time and program by calling 617-696-0562. You may also call to confirm availability before coming during the winter months. Educational programs are available 7 days a week through the entire year.  More information can be found here.

The summit of Great Blue Hill can be reached by hiking or biking from the Trailside Museum and Blue Hill Ski Area parking lots on Route 138. Directions to the Observatory can be found here. Join us to learn about meteorology, weather instruments, the history of the oldest continually operating weather Observatory, or just to enjoy the beautiful, panoramic view from one of the highest points in eastern Massachusetts!
