BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2015 ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME SHOWERS, CLOUDS AND COLD TEMPS CONTINUE Light showers this morning dropped 0.02 inches of rain before sunrise this morning, before giving way to generally cloudy and humid conditions. An overnight low of 36F failed to climb much higher throughout today, as temperatures reached 39F by the 1:00 PM EST observation with light rain beginning at 12:20 PM EST. Both ponds remain mostly frozen, with Houghton's pond at 90% and Ponkapoag Pond at nearly 100% still. Both ponds have not completely thawed yet, meaning as of today, April 7th, both ponds are in the top ten latest thaws on record (see list below). The month of March averaged 4.3 degrees colder than normal, and also finished 2.33 inches of total liquid precipitation drier than normal. Snowfall however, was just about normal, with 13.3 inches falling, just 0.6 inches above the norm. Seasonal snowfall was a new record at 150.8 inches. A cold March along with an even colder January through February have resulted in the coldest start to any year since 1934, and the third coldest average minimum temperature on record: BHO Coldest Jan-Mar Mean Temperature, deg F (1885-2015) 1) 21.4 in 1885 2) 22.1 in 1923 3) 22.8 in 1904 4) 23.2 in 1888 5) 23.5 in 1920 23.5 in 1934 7) 23.6 in 1893 23.6 in 1912 9) 23.8 in 2015 10) 24.2 in 1916 BHO Coldest Jan-Mar Average Minimum Temperature, deg F (1885-2015) 1) 13.4 in 1885 2) 14.9 in 1923 3) 15.0 in 2015 4) 15.2 in 1888 15.2 in 1934 6) 15.3 in 1904 7) 16.6 in 1920 8) 16.7 in 1912 9) 16.8 in 1887 16.8 in 1893 BHO Greatest Seasonal Snowfall, inches (1885-2015): 1) 150.8 in 2014-2015 (through 1 PM April 7th) 2) 144.4 in 1995-1996 3) 136.0 in 1947-1948 4) 119.4 in 2004-2005 5) 113.1 in 2002-2003 6) 111.5 in 1915-1916 7) 109.6 in 1966-1967 8) 106.8 in 1955-1956 9) 103.4 in 1903-1904 10)102.5 in 1922-1923 Latest Houghton's Pond Thaw Date, (1886-2014) 1) April 14, 1926 2) April 10, 1887 April 10, 1888 4) April 9, 1923 5) April 8, 1993 6) April 7, 1899 April 7, 1956 8) April 6, 1916 April 6, 1917 April 6, 1924 April 6, 1940 Latest Ponkapoag Pond Thaw Date, (1886-2014) 1) April 10, 1926 2) April 9, 1923 3) April 6, 1940 4) April 5, 1916 April 5, 1924 6) April 4, 1967 April 4, 1994 ------------------------------------------------------- PRELIMINARY STATS FOR MARCH 2015 TEMPERATURE, Deg.
