The peak gust only 14 MPH from the WNW late in the evening. The low winds in southern New England during the passage of Kyle were due to several factors. The wind field around Hurricane Kyle was asymmetric as it moved up the East Coast, since it was attempting to organize while enduring some wind shear from the trough to its west.  This produced the strongest winds ahead of and east of the center. In addition, the right side of the storm had higher winds due to the contribution of its forward motion to the wind field, which is true for all tropical cyclones. Finally, Kyle was steered northward between a ridge of high pressure to its east, which further increased the pressure gradient and the resulting winds on right side of the storm, and a trough of low pressure to its west, which generated a lower pressure gradient and lower winds to the west of the storm center.   Today's observations:   8 A.M.
