HAIL IN THUNDERSTORMS HERE THE FIRST TWO DAYS IN JULY BIG DOWNBURST OF RAIN AND HAIL BRINGS 0.41 INCH OF RAIN IN THREE MINUTES EARLY FRIDAY MORNING JULY 2...! On Thursday, July 1, a brief thunderstorm brought some small hail and 0.03 inch of precipitation. A much stronger thunderstorm from 4-5 AM EDT Friday morning brought a total of 0.93 of rain and melted hail. An amazingly violent burst of rain and hail occurred between 4:10 and 4:13 a.m. EDT with 0.41 precip. in just three minutes! This was the minute by minute rainfall obtained from the newly installed ASOS weighing gage which replaced the old tipping bucket gage back on June 23rd. A five minute maximum of 0.50 inch was recorded along with 0.80 in just ten minutes ending at 4:13 a.m.! When the standard gage was measured at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning the total was 0.99 inch compared to 1.01 inch for the new ASOS gage. The hail size was estimated at 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. and a wind gust to 45 mph W at 4:03 AM EDT was registered.
