SUMMER HEAT GOES AWAY IN A HURRY! TEMPERATURE DROPS FROM 86 TO 50 DEGREES.... CLOSE TO RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TODAY SO FAR... The thermometer plunged some 20 degrees in 10 to 15 minutes from about 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, or from 85 to 64 and was down to 61 degrees, or a drop of 24 degrees for the hour from 5 to 6 p.m. However on close inspection of the hygrothermograph I see that the maximum drop for any 60 minute period was more like 26 degrees from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A strong back door cold front swept into coastal eastern Massachusetts putting a sudden end to one day of summer heat that saw maximum temperatures reach the middle and upper 80's, the warmest temperatures since the 90's occurred on April 17th. Northeast winds gusted to about 40 MPH at 6:35 p.m. and a rain shower brought 0.12 inch. By midnight the temperature had dropped from an afternoon high of 86 degrees to 52 degrees. Our overnight low recorded this morning was 50 degrees. Today's maximum of 53 degrees through early this afternoon is just one degree above the record low maximum for June 12 of 52 set just two years ago in 2000.
