All of our daily March data to date is included on this page below....this includes all the daily precipitation and snowfall data for the calendar days ending at midnight.... DAILY DISCUSSION....2 P.M. 4/2/2001 (there was no discussion on 4/1.) WHAT A COLD DAY FOR APRIL 1ST! April got off to a cold start and the the 1st was the 8th consecutive day to average colder than normal. But, the high of 33, which was 17 degrees colder than normal, was not a record low maximum. The record still stands at 27 degrees on April 1, 1923. There was a trace of snow in the very light flurries and those flurries even carried over into the early morning hours of April 2nd. Hingham station 10 miles to our east had 0.1 snow in coastal effects flurries early this Monday morning. VERY CLOUDY, COLD, WET, SNOWY ALL DESCRIBE MARCH 2001.... MARCH 2001 WAS THE WETTEST ON RECORD AND 3RD SNOWIEST ON RECORD AT THE OBSERVATORY....MARCH ALSO 4TH WETTEST FOR ANY MONTH.... The monthly precipitation total for the month was 13.07 inches, which sets a new record for March. The previous wettest March was 10.96 inches in 1968. March 2001 also becomes the 4th wettest month for any month on our entire record here at Blue Hill. The wettest months were 8/1955 (18.78"), 6/1998 (17.32"), and 6/1982 (13.73"). The snowfall for the month of 41.4 inches makes March the 3rd snowiest on record surpassed only by 52.0 inches in 1956 and 42.2 inches in 1916. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH ONLY 50 DEGREES... It's a FIVE way tie!! The record lowest March maximum temperature is 50 degrees set in 1887, 1916, 1941, 1956, and 2001...also please not that all three snowiest Marches are on this list. THE MARCH 2000 STATISTICS.... This is a maximum amount and very localized amount because of our elevation of 600 feet above sea level. Please check out the National Weather Service, Boston, homepage and click under "storm totals" for a list of accurate snowfall totals from many towns and cities throughout the area. Please go to: www.nws.noaa.gov/er/box You can probably use 15 to 17 inches for the Milton-Canton-Randolph area. A total of 10 inches fell in Hingham.
